Tampa Bay Area Tourist and Rental Car Accidents: What to Do

by | Oct 29, 2026 | Uncategorized

As the holidays approach, more tourists and snowbirds make their way to Florida. With more rental cars and drivers unfamiliar with Tampa Bay roads, accidents can become especially complicated.

If you are involved in a tourist or rental car accident, take these steps.

Call Law Enforcement

Call 911 and request a crash report. This can be especially important when a visiting driver may soon return home or turn in the rental vehicle.

Document the Accident

If it is safe, photograph:

  • The vehicles and damage
  • License plates
  • The roadway and traffic signals
  • Rental-car and insurance information

Collect contact information from the other driver and any witnesses.

Seek Medical Care

Some injuries may not appear immediately. Seek appropriate medical attention and keep copies of your records and expenses.

Florida law generally requires initial medical care within 14 days of a crash to qualify for applicable Personal Injury Protection benefits.

Report the Crash

If you were driving a rental car, notify the rental company and your auto insurer.

Potential coverage may come from a personal auto policy, rental-car protection, a credit-card benefit or another driver’s insurance. The available coverage depends on the policies and rental agreement involved.

Review Documents Carefully

Keep the rental agreement, receipts, photographs and insurer communications. Do not sign a release or accept an early settlement before understanding how it may affect your rights.
