Dog bites and owners’ liabilities

by | May 20, 2016 | Firm News

Dogs are loving animals that bring joy to so many families. However, being a dog owner can make you liable for harm it may cause upon others. Experts say that dogs bite more than 4.7 million people in the United States every year. To ensure that you are protected, you should be aware of the liabilities you have as a dog owner.

The owner of any dog is liable for damages if the dog bites a person while in a public place or if the dog bites a person that is lawfully in your premises. You will be held responsible even if you were not aware of your dog’s viciousness. It is not a defense to say that your dog has never bitten anyone in the past.

If the person bitten played a part in the dog’s aggressiveness, then that person’s negligence will be considered in determining the percentage of the owner’s liability.

Remember, you are not liable to anyone other than children under 6-years-old, if you place a sign that is visible and readable that includes the words “Bad Dog.”
